Neck pain

Neck pain is a serious and costly health problem in Australia, affecting 80% of adults at some point in their lives. Chronic neck pain or acute discomfort can be excruciating, reducing your mobility, and making it impossible to do even the most basic activities. It may develop into a vicious cycle you never seem to get out. You could find yourself avoiding physical activity since it might exacerbate your low back discomfort.

In turn, this lack of exercise leads to muscle weakness and atrophy which causes you to feel worse about yourself and creates a downward spiral from which there is no escape until something changes.

Discomfort from neck pain not only degrades your mental, physical, and social well-being, but can also affect your relationships with family or friends. Neck pain affects your neck, sometimes accompanied by tingling or numbness. It's caused by irritation to the nervous system, which causes a muscle spasm. This frequently leads to a cycle of muscular spasms, joint discomfort, and further inflammation.

Neck pain is also linked with headaches and migraines. Poor posture at work or sports injuries, trauma, genetics can all contribute to neck pain.

Types of neck pain
Discomfort from neck pain can be due to a variety of factors. However, there are only a few actual reasons for it: structural, referred, and emotional causes. Let's have a closer look at each one to see how the brain translates pain warn you it's coming from your neck.

Causes of neck pain
The most common cause of neck pain is muscular, joint, and bone-related symptoms, ligament issues such as disc bulge/herniation (bulging) or herniated disk disease. A herniated disk is when part of the intervertebral disc squeezes out of its regular position, which can press on the spinal cord or the nerve roots.
A bulging disk may also press on these structures. The spine can be injured due to trauma or degenerative wear and tear. This type of injury often results in chronic neck pain.

Referred pain
Neck discomfort is not always caused by a neck injury. Many things can induce neck pain, including the spinal cord occasionally expressing discomfort. Referred pain occurs when it radiates from somewhere other than your neck.

The emotional link to neck pain
Emotions, stress, and other factors can all cause neck discomfort. If you're worried or anxious about something, you might get backache and/or neck pain. Stress is divided into two categories: the uncontrollable type and the controllable type.

It's easy to overlook that your neck discomfort might be caused by stress. We see it all the time, and it's great when someone's neck pain goes away thanks to the correct medications from their doctor or advice from a mental health experts.

Common neck pain

It's not just the pain that is a problem for people with neck problems, it's also the impact on their quality of life when they are unable to enjoy exercise and other activities.

The good news is there are lots of different treatments available to help you get back to being active again. But which one is right for you? It can be hard to know where to start. Laser therapy is a great solution because it works in two ways. It reduces inflammation and improves blood flow, which promotes healing in your body and gets you back to doing the things that make you happy.

At Create Balance Laser Therapy, we've been helping people recover from neck problems with remarkable success. Why not give us a try?
What we often hear about neck pain

Have you heard people say, ‘I've tried everything to address my neck pain. I’ve seen a chiropractor, physiotherapist, osteopath, and had dry needling, along with other manipulation approaches. Nothing worked.’ Is there an alternative to surgery or drugs for chronic neck pain that actually works? Most people with acute neck pain issues want a quick fix and don't want to think too much about all the options available. They simply want something, anything, to make them feel better and not have a stiff neck anymore.

The most common reasons for neck pain

  • Accidents can result in traumatic neck injuries.

  • Overweight/obesity.

  • Bad office ergonomics – being in front of a computer for too long.

  • Work-related accidents - bending and lifting heavy things incorrectly.

  • Poor posture that strains your neck.

  • Muscular strains/cramps caused by a lack of activity or flexibility.

  • Osteoporosis, which is a bone disease that weakens bones and makes them more prone to fractures.

Neck muscles
Neck muscles are typically overworked when we use our mobile devices. This impacts our health in multiple ways when your shoulder and neck muscles hold your head in a fixed position to look at the phone. You can solve this issue by using a headset such as Bluetooth so as not to strain your neck, or by holding your head up straight when you type on your phone.

Stop living like this and try laser therapy

Why use laser therapy for neck pain?

The term laser therapy, also known as photobiomodulation or Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), is a non-toxic, safe, non-invasive technique that employs infrared and near-infrared light to target specific regions of the body. Infrared and near-infrared light is used to stimulate, protect, and heal cells, reducing pain and many other symptoms related to injury or arthritis.

When the body is inflamed due to neck discomfort, it swells, becomes red and hot, and has an increase in fluid around the injured region. Photobiomodulation reduces inflammation, which relieves pressure on your nerves.

It also promotes nerve functioning, muscular function, and cellular activity. This stimulates the immune system to encourage damaged tissues to repair and regenerate, which speeds up the healing process.

Laser therapy is effective because it can penetrate more deeply than other light-based modalities. It enhances cellular function by stimulating cytochrome oxidase, an enzyme within your mitochondria that helps release energy in your cells used for regenerating new tissues. It also stimulates the formation of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which contributes to cellular metabolism and energy production.

Lasers boost the body's immune function, increase antioxidant activity, and reduce pain by releasing beta-endorphins - the body's natural painkiller and helps increase the range of movement after injury.

Laser therapy is non-invasive, which means there is no joint manipulation, soft tissue therapy, or massage required. It requires only the therapist's hands to operate, so there is no downtime after treatment or concern about possibly contaminating the laser or an open wound.

After their first treatment, many patients report a reduction in pain. After 2-3 treatments, most individuals notice an improvement and continue to improve from then on.
