Back Pain

Back pain is a prevalent and costly health issue in Australia, with an estimated 80% of adults experiencing back pain at some point in their lives.

Back pain disrupts mental, physical, and social well-being, affecting relationships with family and friends and work productivity. Back pain and tight muscles make life a constant worry because you don’t want to move in the wrong way or make it worse.

While there are many treatment options available to relieve or manage back pain, they can be expensive and time-consuming, so it’s worthwhile trying other approaches first.

Types of back pain

There are several reasons for back pain. But you can categorise it into only a few real causes:

  • structural,
  • referred
  • emotional

Let’s look at these in more depth to see how the brain translates pain and informs you that it’s ‘from your back.’

Structural

Back pain can be caused by one or more structures in your spine. The diverse symptoms include muscular, joint, and bone-related symptoms. Ligament issues can occur, such as disc bulge/herniation (bulging)or herniated disk disease, which may result from an accident where there was damage to a person’s lumbar area, for instance during childbirth due to giving birth too quickly without sufficient recovery time between births. However, these aren’t just nerve-related sources either because the lymphatic system plays its part as well.

Referred Pain

Sometimes the spinal cord feels this pain. But sometimes it comes from elsewhere like the stomach, lungs, or heart. This is called referred pain.

The emotional link to back pain

Back pain can be caused by emotions, stress, or other things. You might get back pain if you are stressed or nervous about something. There are two kinds of stress: the kind that you cannot control and the kind that you can control.

It is easy to not notice that your back pain may be due to stress. We see it all the time, and it is satisfying when someone’s back pain goes away with the right medications from their doctor or advice from mental health professionals.

Most common type of back pain

One person out of five has back pain. Back pain can be caused by heavy lifting or being in the same position for too long. The spine is made up of bones called vertebrae that are like little “pillows” for your body’s nerves and muscles. These vertebrae provide feelings and movement to your body. The discs between the vertebrae have a watery gel-like centre and a tough fibrous ring, which can tear or rupture, causing excruciating pain.
